Ethics Statement

Preamble. The North American Dipterists Society exists to advance the scientific study, understanding and appreciation of the insect order Diptera, to foster scientific cooperation and collaboration among dipterists, and to promote the dissemination and communication of scientific and popular knowledge concerning dipterology. In aiming to bring together individuals with a common interest in the science and appreciation of true flies, an ethical foundation is paramount to achieving the unity envisioned for being a member of the dipterological community, regardless of membership with this or that particular society.

Although certainly applicable across dipterology and beyond, even to the point of common sense, within this Society there are ethical standards of conduct which represent the general expectations for all persons in their associations with the Society. The scope of our Ethics Statement covers only activities held specifically under the auspices of the Society, although we would hope such ethics would be on display at all times. We fully agree with and endorse the Ethics Statement of the Entomological Society of America, but we reiterate or expand here for our Society:

Professional conduct — Scientific research (including dipterology) requires a high degree of integrity and ethics to bring the science forward. Research is held to the highest standards, with the full expectation of honesty and veracity across all aspects. We expect that anything you may report in a presentation during a Society event, or submit for consideration in Society publications, is actually yours to report, with credit given where credit is due. In evaluating or commenting on the work of others, whether after a presentation in a Society meeting or in reviewing manuscripts for Society publications, always treat others as colleagues and with respect. Research activities in dipterology should follow all applicable laws and regulations related to that activity.
Personal conduct — Like the order Diptera, dipterists are a group with great diversity, and inclusivity and a safe, welcoming environment for all persons is of utmost importance to us. We expect civility, respect, and consideration in all interactions regardless of differing views, opinions or personal characteristics (including, but not limited to, all US federal and California protected classes). It is essential that our meetings and events are places where everyone feels safe, welcome and respected. As such, negative behaviors will not be tolerated, including bullying, harassment, intimidation, threatening, demeaning or derogatory speech, or discrimination in any form. It is fine to have and express scientific disagreements, but all parties are expected to handle those disagreements in a professional and respectful manner.

Epilogue. We are very pleased to have each and every one of you as a member, in all of your diverse and varied backgrounds, and you should always participate in the activities of the Society with integrity, good conduct and an ethical framework as a dipterist.

Please contact us with any concerns or to report potential breeches of conduct within the scope of the Society's Ethics Statement. More immediate reports can be made directly to a Society Director or Officer on-site of any Society function. Unacceptable behavior from or towards any participant in Society activities will not be tolerated. Any such reports will be kept confidential to the extent possible and will be investigated thoroughly by the Board of Directors and Officers, who will determine the appropriate course of action and outcome.
