The City of Reno is a relatively small city (population approx. 255,000) in northern Nevada less than 24 km (15 miles) from the California border in the western United States. Located in Washoe County, Nevada, the city lies in a high desert river valley just beyond the eastern edges of the Plumas and Tahoe National Forests. This river valley, known as the Truckee Meadows, stretches the 130 km (80 miles) between Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, with Reno right in between. This well-known destination for resort and casino tourism is a naturalists destination as well, being close to extensive natural and scenic areas ranging from montane Sierra Nevada to desert and salt lakes. For more about Reno and the vicinity, check back here later and see the General Information page, and explore the various things going on in the Reno-Tahoe area.
The Congress venue will be the Silver Legacy Resort, in the heart of Reno. The Silver Legacy is one of the resorts making up "The Row" - three distinct but interconnected resorts. Within the Row are 25 restaurants, 23 bars and lounges and 11 nightspots, not to mention the bustling activity of Reno as a whole.
The facilities for the Congress are perfectly in line with the needs of ICDX including:
The ICDX congress logo (above left) is based on the Delhi Sands flower-loving fly, Rhaphiomidas terminatus abdominalis (Mydidae). This highly distinctive species is native to southern California and is on the brink of extinction as its sandy habitat has been under threat of development. The Delhi Sands flower-loving fly was the only dipteran to be listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Scientists petitioned the species in 1990 and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed it as endangered in 1993. The photograph of the male presented here is by Robert A. Hamilton, licensed with CC BY-ND-NC 1.0.
